"The Deacon" Scripture Texts: 1 Timothy 3:8-13; Acts 6:1-7 Some of the greatest and godliest men I have known are deacons. The best supporters I have had in ministry are deacons. I grew up in the home of a deacon. I have great respect for the office of deacon and for those who serve well as deacons. Our church is set to elect more deacons. As we do so, let us examine the Biblical qualifications and responsibilities of those who serve in this capacity. We will examine two passages of Scripture as we do so. I. The Qualifications for those who Serve as Deacons, (1 Timothy 3:8-13) A. The Deacon's Character, (v.9) They should be dignified, honest in speech, not an alcoholic, and not greedy for material possessions or wealth. B. The Deacon's Faith, (v.10) They should understand the doctrines of the faith and should be assured of their salvation. C. The Deacon's Reputation, (v.11) They should have a good name in the community and church and of proven character. D. The Woman Deacon, (v.11) She is to be of good character, faith, and reputation as well. (There is continuing debate over whether this refers to the wives of deacons, or of women deacons. The texts leans men toward the form rather than the latter.) Our church does not ordain women. E. The Deacon's Family, (v.12) He should be a faithful husband and loving father. F. The Deacon's Reward, (v.13) He has the respect of his neighbors, and the rich reward of his Lord Jesus Christ. II. The Responsibilities of those who serve as a Deacon, (Acts 6:1-7). The office of deacon originated out of a need in the church for those to assist the Apostiles of the Lord in serving the widows in the church at Jerusalem, (vv.1-2). A. The Deacon's Spiritual Responsibilities, (v.3). He is to maintain a good reputation, be filled with the Spirit, and be filled with the wisdom of God. B. The Deacon's Congregational Responsibilities, (vv.2-3) He is to serve the needs of the congregation so the pastor (s) can concentrate on prayer and study. Conclusion: Acts 6:7 reveals that a church well served by deacons will result in the Gospel spreading to more people which results in more people becoming followers of Jesus Christ. Let us prayerfully go about this business of electing deacons. |
